Outdoor Pizza Ovens: Buying Guides & Comparisons

Gas, wood-fired and multi-fuel outdoor pizza ovens compared — plus the accessories, gear and know-how to make great pizza at home.

A good backyard pizza oven is the rare purchase people use every week instead of twice a summer. Modern portable ovens reach roughly 950°F, which is what makes the leopard-spotted crust and the 60–90 second bake possible — your kitchen oven tops out around 500–550°F.

The decision comes down to three things: fuel (gas is easiest, wood and charcoal have the most flavor), size (a 12-inch oven is fine for two people; a family wants 16 inches or more), and how much you want to move it around. Our guides break each one down so you can match the oven to the way you'll actually cook.

Pizza Ovens: quick answers

Are outdoor pizza ovens worth it?

If you'll make pizza more than a handful of times a year, yes. The cooking temperature is the whole point — a ~950°F oven makes pizza that a home oven simply can't. If you only want pizza a couple of times a year, a pizza steel or stone in your regular oven is the cheaper experiment.

Gas or wood-fired pizza oven — which should I buy?

Buy gas if you want convenience: you turn a dial and cook. Buy wood or charcoal if you enjoy the ritual and the smoky flavor and don't mind managing a fire. Multi-fuel ovens that accept a gas burner as an add-on split the difference.

What size pizza oven do I need?

A 12-inch oven suits one or two people. A 14–16 inch oven covers a family of four comfortably. Choose 18 inches or larger only if you regularly cook for groups or want to bake more than pizza.
