How much hummingbird nectar should I make?

Tell us how many feeders you have, and get exact sugar and water amounts for the standard 1 to 4 mix, plus how often to change it in your weather.

How do you want to size the batch?

fl oz

Printed on the feeder or its box. Many hold 8 to 16 oz.

The mix is always 1 part plain white sugar to 4 parts water. No honey, no brown sugar, no artificial sweeteners, and no red dye.

How to mix it

  1. Dissolve the sugar in hot water. Boiling for a minute or two helps it dissolve and slows fermentation.
  2. Let it cool completely before filling a feeder.
  3. Store any extra in the refrigerator for up to about a week.
  4. Rinse the feeder with hot water and a bottle brush every time you refill. Avoid leaving soap residue.

How often to change the nectar

Daytime highReplace
90°F or hotterEvery dayNectar ferments and grows mold fastest in the heat.
80–89°FEvery 2 days
70–79°FEvery 3 to 4 days
Below 70°FEvery 5 to 6 daysStill replace it sooner if it looks cloudy or has floating specks.

Typical guidance from bird conservation groups. When in doubt, change it sooner. Cloudy, stringy or moldy nectar means dump it and scrub the feeder.

Good habits

  • Hang feeders about two weeks before hummingbirds usually arrive, and leave them up a couple of weeks after you see the last one.
  • Choose a shaded spot near some cover, and keep feeders clear of window glass or give the windows markings.
  • Skip red dye. The red on the feeder is enough, and dye is unnecessary.
How this is calculated

Dissolving sugar adds volume, so one cup of sugar in four cups of water makes about 4.5 cups, not 5. We size the batch so the finished nectar still comes out at one part sugar to four parts water: water = 88% of the batch volume, sugar = 22% of it, in cups. Weight uses 200 g per cup of granulated sugar, and a cup is 236.6 mL.

The change schedule is typical guidance and not a guarantee. Sun, humidity and how many birds visit all change how quickly nectar spoils.

Quick answers

What is the best hummingbird nectar recipe?

Mix one part plain white table sugar with four parts water. For example, 1 cup of sugar and 4 cups of water. Do not use honey, brown sugar, artificial sweeteners or red dye.

Should I boil the water for hummingbird food?

Boiling for a minute or two helps the sugar dissolve and may slow fermentation, but it is not strictly required. Either way, let the nectar cool completely before filling the feeder.

How often should I change hummingbird nectar?

In hot weather, 90 degrees or more, change it every day. In the 80s, about every two days, in the 70s every three to four days, and in cooler weather every five to six days. If it turns cloudy or moldy, change it right away.

Do I need red dye in hummingbird food?

No. The red parts of the feeder attract hummingbirds, and dye is not needed and is best avoided.

Why not use honey or brown sugar?

Honey ferments quickly and can grow dangerous mold, and brown sugar and artificial sweeteners lack what hummingbirds can safely use. Plain white sugar is closest to natural flower nectar.
